When in a hazardous environment, firefighters utilize self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) so they can continue their work in an otherwise un-survivable environment. 

 Liverpool FD constructed a room in Station 1 that is basically a maze of different situations a firefighter could face in any normal house fire.  This includes hanging debris, tight spaces, and stairs.  All of this is done blindfolded to simulate the lack of sight a firefighter might face in a fire.  Training in this room is done with SCBA so that a firefighter can negotiate these obstacles wearing the same equipment they would use on a real call.
