By Captain Joshua Ambrose
June 24, 2017

On Saturday June 24th, 2017 at 1255, Liverpool Fire Department was dispatched to the Onondaga Lake Parkway for a large vehicle that struck the railroad bridge. Liverpool Engine 5 (Capt Albanese) and Engine 2 (Capt Ambrose) went enroute following dispatch. Upon arrival, it was confirmed that a large RV had struck the railroad bridge and left the scene. When the vehicle struck the bridge it caused a large amount of damage to the vehicle and also created a large debris field on the Parkway. Command held with units on the scene and started the large clean up effort to reopen the road so traffic could again travel down the Parkway. Members worked on scene for about 20 minutes cleaning up the debris field. The scene was turned over to OCSO units, CSX representatives (for bridge inspection) & cleanup crews. The driver of the RV and his passenger were uninjured in this crash and were located a short time later by OCSO in the Town of Clay.

LFD would like to remind everyone that NO commercial vehicles are allowed down the Onondaga Lake Parkway. The bridge is labeled at the height of 10'9 and large commercial vehicles will strike the bridge.

Units: Engine 5, Engine 2
