This evening, Liverpool Fire Department had the pleasure of meeting Joey Abt. Joey, a local 12 year-old boy, has made it a goal to visit 77 fire departments this summer. In his travels, he has visited many local fire departments, many of which are in Onondaga County. With open arms, we extended an invite to Joey's family to come spend the evening with the members of Liverpool Fire Department. As Joey arrived, we started the night off with pizza and wings and Joey was given a few gifts that included an Honorary Member plaque, a custom polo shirt, and an "Abt" pillow case made from turnout gear. Given the choice between seeing the fire trucks or taking a station tour, Joey quickly replied to go on a station tour first. This was a special tour, as Joey led us around, sat in the Chief's chair and then decided he wanted to be a bunk-in with us! As we concluded the tour, members from Station 2 took Joey and his father for a bucket ride in Truck 2! As soon as Joey was back on the ground, Station 3 members showed Joey a car fire (using our vehicle fire prop) and was then given the chance to put out his own fire! It seemed that Joey was a natural born firefighter as he put the fire out right away. The fun didn't stop there as the Chiefs asked Joey which vehicle he would like to ride in to get to the marina for a BOAT RIDE! After a few minutes of deciding, we ended up in Rescue 1 and took a ride to the marina where Chief Laakso was waiting with Water Rescue 1. While aboard, Joey used the deck gun and took a ride to the backside of the Amphitheater. This was quite meaningful to Joey as he will be attending the Luke Bryan concert this Saturday at the Lakeview Amphitheater. Luke Bryan is one of Joey's idols, so it will certainly be a fun show for him! Finally, as we arrived back to shore, we asked Joey if he would like one more surprise - "yes!" We boarded the Rescue and took Joey out for an ice cream. Joey had an eventful night at Liverpool that was filled with fun activities! The smile that filled Joey's face is something that none of us will ever forget. Joey's aspiration to be a firefighter was shown in many ways. Joey's positivity filled the room, the trucks, and put a smile on all of our faces. It was a true pleasure to spend the evening with Joey & his wonderful family.

We would like to thank everyone that made the night a success! To help Joey continue his journey, please share his Facebook page, share this post, or pass on his page to those that may be able to help!
